History of Esslinger Burg

From the Middle Ages to today – Dicker Turm, Hochwacht and the town wall.

Esslinger Burg is among the oldest and best-preserved castle complexes in south-west Germany. It was built in the 13th century as the northern bastion of the imperial city of Esslingen and still shapes the image of the old town today.

Today the outdoor areas – castle square, castle garden and rampart walks – are freely accessible all year round. The interior rooms (such as the Dicker Turm) can be experienced on guided tours.

Middle Ages

Founded in the Middle Ages

In the 13th century the castle was built as part of the town-side fortifications of the imperial city of Esslingen, securing access to the city from the Neckar.

Landmark

Dicker Turm

The striking round tower is the castle's landmark. It can be viewed from outside at any time; the interior (viewing platform) is currently open on guided tours.

Defences

Hochwacht & defences

The Hochwacht and the preserved rampart walks testify to the military importance of the site. The Seilergang along the wall is a popular photo motif.

Fortifications

Town fortifications

The castle was part of the medieval town fortifications of Esslingen. Remains of the town wall and towers are still visible in the old town.
